{"id":303,"date":"2014-11-11T20:10:12","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T20:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrbiggs.net\/ron\/?p=303"},"modified":"2014-11-11T20:10:12","modified_gmt":"2014-11-11T20:10:12","slug":"one-reason-the-gop-won","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mrbiggs.net\/ron\/?p=303","title":{"rendered":"One reason the GOP won"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #141823;\">NOTE: I was going to make this part of a larger blog entry &#8220;New Rights and Lefts&#8221; but at this point it seems like that will be more a book than a blog entry. \u00a0Rather, I&#8217;d like to make this one instance of how new politics is escaping old paradigms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #141823;\">But I was just forwarded this video where <a title=\"Matt Lee quizzes Psaki on Dempsey\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1lLI4iw3qzM\">AP writer Matt Lee quizzes WH Spokeswoman Jen Psaki<\/a>. \u00a0Like the rest of us, he was trying to reconcile\u00a0Dempsey&#8217;s remarks that Israel went to &#8220;extraordinary lengths&#8221; to protect Gaza civilians with Psaki&#8217;s earlier remarks about &#8220;appalling casualties&#8221;. \u00a0To wit: &#8220;When you say the Administration is appalled, did you just mean the State Department?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #141823;\">Now let&#8217;s get some things straight, as if I need to. \u00a0I voted for Obama, twice. \u00a0If anything, I think Obamacare needs to go further. \u00a0I think global warming is real and a threat to civilization. \u00a0All that being told, this right here encapsulates everything that so quickly disillusioned me about the Obama administration. \u00a0This is one of those things that I thought had a priori bipartisan support. \u00a0If not being explicitly pro-Israel, at least fact-checking before making official statements on behalf of the President of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #141823;\">I know a lot of people wonder why so many GOP candidates won last Tuesday, but as a lifelong Democrat who actually talks to the other side, I hope this sheds some light on it. \u00a0Obama has certainly been the butt of a lot of vicious attacks and conspiracy theories. \u00a0Benghazi has been a rather noxious one. \u00a0But when\u00a0taken as a whole, it reveals\u00a0a distinct policy difference that more stately likes of McCain can certainly address and exploit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I, for one, am looking forward to seeing McCain <a title=\"McCain expected to chair Armed Services Committee\" href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/content\/republicans-prepare-to-assume-control-of-us-senate\/2516210.html\">chair the Armed Services Committee<\/a>. I hope he will elevate so many conspiracy theories (like Benghazi) into needed policy debates. If he shines in that role, he could play kingmaker for the 2016 GOP presidential run.<\/p>\n<p>And if the Democrats want to thwart this advance on the American center, they can&#8217;t just fire back with &#8220;they cut funding for the VA&#8221; or arguments which, while technically valid, miss the point of what voters are looking for. \u00a0The presidential election isn&#8217;t about pork or benefits. \u00a0It&#8217;s about a grand overarching policy and vision for America. \u00a0When even the Economist is asking <a title=\"What will America Fight For?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/leaders\/21601508-nagging-doubt-eating-away-world-orderand-superpower-largely-ignoring-it-what\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;What will America fight for?&#8221;<\/a>, it&#8217;s a legitimate and pressing question that Democrats\u00a0will ignore at their peril.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOTE: I was going to make this part of a larger blog entry &#8220;New Rights and Lefts&#8221; but at this point it seems like that will be more a book than a blog entry. \u00a0Rather, I&#8217;d like to make this one instance of how new politics is escaping old paradigms.
